A GRIM NATWICK WALK

Here's some Grim Natwick animation from Ub Iwerk's "Soda Squirt." The guy is clearly gay and I hesitated to post it lest I offend some Theory Corner readers. In the end I couldn't help myself. It's just so funny!

Thanks to Marc Deckter for the great frame grabs!

  4. HAHHAHAHA. what A FA...BULOUS post! I wonder if grim (or spence) acted it out the walk before animating it or they used reference? or they were just great animators and did it straight ahead and it came out perfect. probably the latter.

oh yeah, blogger crammed your posts together on my screen too. Blogger glitches i guess.

  10. !!!! EDDIE !!!

    Great posteses~!

i always think about that. men and women, and hermaphrodites. what makes a guy or girl??? As a caricature artist, i've drawn quite a few people that i really have no idea what (if any) sex they were. it's weird!!

I found that the two main facial differences between men and women:

    1. Men usually have a stronger and lower angled jaw than women

    2. Men (almost 100% of the time) have an deeper indent where the bridge of the nose begins (between their eyes)

these are the usually elements that ruin a convincing drag queen.

and If this funny cartoon flamer didn;t have these two elements, we'd probably think he was female!

  11. I would prefer to think of it as not gay but flamboyant.

  12. I'm embarrassed. I just saw the pictures before reading the text, and I thought that it was a girl. In fact, I thought that it was a tribute to Marlene Dietrich. I think I need new glasses.... :D

  13. Marlo: Interesting theory! You gave me a great Idea for a post!

  14. Heh, imho it's not a theory Marlo's talking about, but physical fact, Eddie.
Funny, we were talking about the exact same thing today at work--that men have that neanderthal-esque brow bone(in comparison to women, anyway)--and Marlo--speaking of banes of drag queens--don't forget the ol' adam's apple! Dead giveaway.
And yep, that lower jaw thing...even a heavy man can work that jawbone in ways fortunately unknown to womankind. Fortunately, I say.

I'd add a few observations: men's face planes are usually "flatter"; their noses larger and stronger in relation to the rest of the face(maybe partially due to lack of softness and also lack of the outward curve from cheekbone to jaw that women have). Eyes generally smaller.

Iwerks did a lot of the crassest stuff in the 30s in his cartoons; crude gags that still have some shock value. There are some really bizarre Flip shorts, alright.

  15. A gentleman always kisses a lady's hand. It gives him a chance to examine the wrist bones up close to make sure there will be no horrifying surprises later in the evening.

  16. Jenny: Man! This site attracts some pretty thoughtful people! Look for the Marlo reply post. I think you'll find it interesting!

The Iwerks is crude in one sense but sophisticated in other ways. I don't think animation people fully understand the debt that animation technique owes to stereotypes.

Ordinary people don't walk in an interesting way. We make their walks interesting by adding fragments of stereotypes. You might bring a leg around laboriously like a fat man then slap it down like a nerd, then lift it like a gay, etc. If I were an animator I'd collect and study every stereotype I could find.

I know in the real world stereotypes have horrible consequences but in our world they have unexpected beauty.
