These are horrible pictures. The anatomy doesn't make sense, the line quality is non-existent, the shapes and volumes don't fit into each other. ..terrible! And the color looks like it was done by a five year-old. I almost threw these away a dozen times. Now I'm glad I kept them because they're a memory of a session which proved to be a breakthrough for me. That was the night I realized I could draw and paint anything I wanted, regardless of what the model actually looked like.
All of the pictures on this post are of the same model. I drew her fat, thin, long-armed, short armed, red-haired, black-haired, small breasted and big breasted. I love the thin forearm. Imagine what she'd look like if she let her arms hang straight down!
Here I added wallpaper just for the heck of it. I do that a lot now but this is where it started. I'll post some more from this memorable night when the drawings turn up.

Life drawing was my WORST class back in animation school. I nor the teachers were ever satisfied with anything I drew. Especially the one Russian lady. Hooboy!
ReplyDeleteI did poorly in it for two reasons: 1. I HATE simply rendering what's in front of me. 2. That Russian teacher told me sometimes that I often exaggerated the poses. I felt like blurting out, "Well DUH!! I'm a cartoonist. That's what we do." I didn't though. I think I just nodded my head or something like that.
No, I don't have many of those drawings to show anybody. We all burned ours in a big bonfire at our graduation party. (I got 15 minutes of sleep that night).

This post reminds me about art from ancient China. Ancient Chinese artists were encouraged to draw the same figure many times. This technique allowed the artist to see new attributes of the figure they did not see before.

ReplyDeleteI have similar breakthroughs too. I used to try really hard to achieve photo realism. I'd really punish myself for not achieving a perfect likeness. But I realised that by going down that road I'd always come second best to photography. The irony is that although I am still in awe of the likes of Caravaggio I get far more enjoyment from art/illustrations by Basquiat, Haring, Quentin Blake, and Katie Rice. I have way more fun when I'm being playful.

ReplyDeleteI think you're wrong. These aren't bad at all. They're not the "ideal" lifedrawings ever but they're especially unique to the artist. Got your signature all over them. I love it. The top's my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI have to try and find some drawings you did of a "sexy gurl", you were trying to teach us how to draw, back from CalArts days in 1990 or so... You wouldn't give me the drawing (you said it was awful) - I had to beg you for it! I kept all your "Ferp and Bart" roughs from the ill-fated Bakers Man gig too - they were too good to leave behind!
