SCREAMIN JAY HAWKINS, BO DIDDLEY, "DEM BONES". THE PLATTERS

Here's Screamin' Jay Hawkins doing "I Put a Spell on You". Hawkins' true love was ballads, the kind Jim Nabors used to sing.

One of Bo Diddley's best songs. Ralph used it in "Fritz the Cat".

Not the best version of "Dem Bones", but it's still interesting. I imagine this is the universal anthemn of doctors all over the world.

The Platters doing "Great Pretender". Silky smoothe and satisfying!

  3. I couldn't remember his name before. But thanks to this blog I was just reminded. Yes, Jay Hawkins was the one who fathered 75 illegitimate children with I believe 75 different women. Damn, his boys could swim. ;)

Also, I loves that Bo Diddley. Many people admire David Bowie and Alice Cooper for the way they portrayed a larger than life character of their own creation as they performed (David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust and Vincent Furnir as Alice Cooper). But, I believe Bo Diddley did it first. Through his songs he portrayed himself as a womanizing demon of sorts. Truly an original genius.

  4. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! These last two posts from you ROCK THE HOUSE!

Bo Diddley is fabulous. Those guitar licks can't be touched. I dare anyone to try to sit still during a Bo Diddley song. I'm actually going to develop an ice routine to a Bo Diddley song. I'm debating on Bo Diddley or Roadrunner.

If you all are interested in this kind of music, there is a radio show in Pittsburgh (that's also simulcasted on the Internet) that is on every Sunday night from 6:00 PM - 12:00 AM EST on station WJAS - 1320 AM. It called the Doug Hoerth Sunday Night Rock n Roll Oldies Party. Uncle Douggie plays all of that music on his show.

For an ice routine, nothing on earth tops Screamin' Jay's "Constipation Blues" and Brian Boitano would throw a hissy fit 'cause he didn't think of it first.

  6. All these are great, ecspecially that Bo Diddley. He is playing that song much faster than he usually does.

Fun Fact for Eddie: The area I live in(Pittsburgh and surrounding areas), has a rich history with black musicians. Porky Chedwick, an old radio DJ, had a radio show on 106.7 WAMO that only played rock n roll by black musicians, one of the few that did in the 50s-60s.

  10. Ryan: Fascinating! Thanks for the links!

Amid: You're right! That is the best version, hands down!

Anon: For me "Constpation Blues" ranks third. I'd give "Alligator Wine" the two spot!
