WELCOME TO THE MIKE PLAYHOUSE

Tonight Theory Corner relinquishes its bandwidth to my friend Mike's TV show, also called Mike's Philoprogenetive Playhouse. Here you'll encounter the celebrity artist's fav actors, musicians and lechable women. First on the bill (above): Spike Jones with Perez Prado.

.

Mike's a big Soupy Sales fan. Here's (above) an excerpt from the famous early 60s kids'show.

Hang on because it starts to get weird here. Mike is a big Sophia Loren fan. He watches the films endlessly, waiting for the nude scenes which, in the era these films were made in, never came. I have to admit Sophia looks pretty good here.

Now things REALLY get weird! Here's Annette Funicello (above) singing "Lonely Guitar, There is No One to Love Us." Mike drools rivers over Annette and probably cries over songs like this one.

Here's another Annette film called something like "Swingin' Pajama Party." Actually Mike isn't in love with the Mouseketeer Annette but rather the older Annette shown here. I don't get it. Annette was a cute kid, no doubt about it, but she didn't age well. I can speak candidly about this because I'm safe at home at my computer. If I said this infront of Mike who knows what would happen?

Last but not least, a sample of the awesome (according to Mike) acting ability of Shirley Temple. I saw "Heidi" with Mike and had to endure endless tear-filled replays of Shirley returning grumpy old men's vitriol with sweet, little moppet charm. Now if only Shirley had sung "Lonely Guitar..."

  5. LOL! The Spike Jones show has always been my very favorite! The first time I ever saw that sketch with Perez Prado, my brain almost exploded...Two of the world's greatest orchestras on the same stage!!! NOTHING that historical has ever happened since.

Billy Barty (the midget) is one of the greatest performers of all time! He was a great actor, comedian, and dancer! My favorite Billy Barty scenes are from The Spike Jones Show and Peter Gunn. He also does a funny Liberace impression!

  7. I'd just like to add that about six months ago I walked into the cheese section at Ralph's and who should be strolling by with her cart? Sophia fucking! Loren, that's who!
Let me tell ya mike, she still looks pretty damned amazing.
Mike I'd suggest you park yourself between the lobsters and the spicy Monterrey Jack for a few months until she shows. Then you can sweep her off her feet with your Italian charms. Myself I'd just use chloroform, but you wouldn't need such primitive tools to get her back to your swinging bachelor bungalow.

Aw, Shirley Temple is underestimated. She really did posses a unique charm and talent(especially when she was tiny).

If you want hours of entertaining listening pleasure, ask Ralph Bakshi what he thinks of Perez Prado.

  14. Gary: It was great seeing you yesterday! It was inspiring to meet someone so dedicated to skilled cartooning. I was also impressed by the Preston Blair work you showed me. It made me want to take the course myself!

Chris: Aaargh! I couldn't open up more than a couple of your links, I don't know why.

Jenny: Shirley Temple really was talented. What strikes me as funny is a worldly guy like Mike getting all sentimental over her.

  15. I think Mike's tastes are very cute. It shows that deep inside he's a big kid at heart from looking at all these clips. Mike you like Annette right? What did you think of "Back to the Beach?" I thought it was a good parody of her and Frankie's old beach films.

Sean - I've never seen it. I like Annette circa 1963 or so, for obvious reasons that have nothing to do with her singing.

The thing I like about this post is that Eddie, after illustrating MY taste with puppets and midgets, follows it up with a post about HIS OWN taste in Mozart arias!!!

Folks, don't you believe it! When I walk into Eddie's living room, I'm confonted with gorilla masks, totem poles, pink shirts and plaid suits.
He's just as lowbrow as I am! His house looks like the prop room for the Spike Jones Show!

Vincent - Whoa! All you needed was a time machine to take you back to Sophia circa 1958, and a Carlo Ponti costume. (Her taste in men was always a little weird.)

Steve - good luck with yer eye surgery today, man! Hope you can lookit 'er mouf' again real soon!

Chris Headrick - How the heck ARE you, man?

    Kali - HA HA!

That's Peter Sellers as the DOctor with Loren. I've never seen the clip nor the movie but have heard a couple novelty recordings with both Loren and Sellers. One they sing about Bangers And Mash the other he plays an East Indian Doctor and she's a patient. Can't remember the name of the latter.
Little Annette is as cute as a button in that Zorro clip....but I hate it when actors fake badly playing instruments....at leasr have some coachin on the proximity of the fingering.
