A HAT FOR SAYING, "NO!"

I got myself a Halloween present this year, which is pictured above. It's a Spanish "No" hat! When you shake your head "no" the little balls shake back and forth and even make a cool thunking sound when they hit the brim. If you want to see it just try to borrow some money from me some time!

The problem with the hat is that it's no good for saying "yes." Of course you can sometimes say yes without using the word. If a guy asks "Would you like me to stop standing on your foot?", you might say, "No, no! Stand no longer on my foot!" That's three no's! Or you can lie sideways and shake your head no, which will appear as yes to him. Aaaargh! I'm getting confused!

  2. Oh man oh man! I think I might know the actual function! I heard once that the ball were for deterring flies from going near the person's face while wearing the hat. Since the little ball swing around all the time, they're like an ever-vigilant fly swatter... thing.

    At least I think so...

  3. Taber: So THAT'S it!!!! Thanks a million for putting that up!

According to Milt Gray the reason cowboys always had a lit cigarette in their mouth was to keep the flies away.

  5. It's a terrific chapeau, alright. But if you cut up a No-Pest Strip and stick small rectangles of it to every ball, the hat would kill all flying insects, not just drive them away.

  7. Whit: A great idea! I'll pass it on to the gauchos!
Lee: Maybe. It's meant for a head much smaller than mine.

Mike: How did you get that graphic to animate!!???

  9. You could put the hat on the side of your head to say yes.

This is a handy app for making animated graphics out of video files

  10. Uncle Eddie!

Grand topper there! I like it. Drama! Passion! Sizzle! And all in a hat.

Here is an idea for a hat to say "Yes" with!

  11. What about when you are unsure.

How do you shake your hat for "maybe" or "sorta" or "meh"

Or does a simple shrug of the shoulders suffice?

  14. Uncle Eddie, Thanks. Yes it was a quick doodle. I was struck by the idea while reading your post and didn't have time to try it for a few hours.

    Glad you like it!

  15. Gee, I dunno, Eddie. This looks like what Zorro's hat might have looked like had Don Diego actually been a "fop" for real!

  16. Nate: Many thanks for the Mac reference! that's a nice thing to have!
