The Future of Prime-Time TV Animation #1

OK, here it is! The future of prime-time TV animation lies with dramatic, over-the-top, fully animated, 2D, series programs! Here's the way they might look: Lots of intense acting. Cartoony styles are great for this.
Cartoon drawings are more forgiving of mistakes. They make it possible to animate faster.
No, the guy below isn't grabbing her breast. It looks like that because I had to draw fast from the TV screen and didn't have time to correct it.
Cartoony drawings allow for a lot of distortion. Never the same drawing twice.
It's a chance to bring real cartooning back to TV.

  4. I have a theory Marlo!

    (If Eddie will allow me...)

The greatest acting ever in a motion picture was in "Benji: The Hunted". Three quarters of the picture consisted of Benji, lost in the wilderness... looking around sadly at the miles and miles that separated him from his master... surprised to find baby foxes in a hollow stump... concerned that their mother had abandoned them... determined to raise them as his own pups, come hell or high water... smiling paternally at their cuteness... patient with them, teaching them to fend for themselves in the wilderness...

All this with absolutely no dialogue or explanatory narration by Rex Allen. The dog registered all of this on his face. I swear to God! I've never seen anything like it. Go rent the video. It's one of the greatest movies ever made.

    See ya
    Steve

    P.S. PENGUIN JOKE

  5. I'm enjoying this future so far!

And, Steve, I've been enjoying all of these YouTube links. It's supplemental entertainment to this @#$!% great blog!

  6. Eddie, what do you predict it will be called? Is that still a secret? I 'm dying to watch this. Your drawings are cool, I don't know how you pros can get that kind of thing in one shot, without a ton of sketches.
Stephen, how come you have time to comment here but has not updated the blogroll to John K's Lesson 4?
I used to love that Benji movie, you made me want to see it again.

  7. Steve, I totally agree with you on 'Benji: The Hunted.' I was a kid when that film came out, and even when I was 9, I was amazed at that Benji actin'! I probably haven't seen the movie in 10+ years, but I can still clearly picture some of those scenes with the cubs (they were cougers though, not foxes, right?) and how well they all worked out on film together. It's an action movie and I think it got me a little teary-eyed in spots.

  8. Eddie, I hope you're not just sitting back and hoping for this to happen. Carpe dium, man. MAKE this happen.

Unless you're doing that already. Inwhich case, I'd like to help out in any way I can. :)

  9. Eddie - your roughs are much much much more dynamic than 99.9% of finished animation on TV today...

Someone give Eddie his own studio, so he can take over the world Clampett-style!

  10. Wait, if you were drawing fast from the T.V. then... this must already be on a channel somewhere! What show is this, that inspires you so?

Unless you were using the screen of a T.V. set as a desk. There's always that possibility.

  11. Eddie, those drawings are hilarious! Look at those poses.

HOW is primetime going to end up like this?

  12. 'tangaroa', you are right...

Gee, I love these beautiful, loose, rough sketches. Nothing else like them. Yum.

    Okay, MORE!

Makinita, Steve, Vincent, Mike, Tom: I answered your posts in the wrong place. Look up the end of the first comments page.

Steve: I stumbled on your profile. You have incredibly good taste in music!!!! I'm gonna print out your list.

Jesse: Get an animation disc from Cartoon Color or from ebay. I made my own from white plexi and masonite, loosely following the instructions in Preston Blair's book.

Of course you can draw directly into the computer if you have the right program but you need to ask someone else about that. I'm going to try that real soon but haven't made the plunge yet.

  14. Hey, I like this idea! Especially if there are no "jokes" in the show - just super serious exaggerated&cartoony acting.

Am I going to get in trouble if I steal this idea???

What show were you watching when you drew these funny sketches?

  15. Gyrobo: Those drawings are from a DVD of "Morning Becomes Electra."
To be honest, the movie is painful to watch but it has some really funny acting scenes in it.

"Electra"? What, the Roz Russell film? Poor Roz--funny? Oh dear.

    Hey, I know it's a drama...isn't it? Poor actors! ; )

  18. Marc: Don't use my drawings but it's OK with me if you use the idea. Better get an OK from John too. He's the guy who's done the most to promote this sort of thing.

  19. There's nothing funnier than cartoon characters taking themselves way more seriously than they should... just like in real life!

    These are great drawings.

  22. I wish that would happen. Um, to be honest with you, I have a feeling they'll be making more annoying americanized anime type shows. If there's a word for them, let me know because I'm not familiar with that sort of lingo.

  23. Wow, another Spumco bigshot online.

    Good acting.

  24. Eddie, your so awesome.

I'm thinking of putting up some original Flash Cartoons on my site.

It'll be like cartoonish slapstick, parody and dry humor?

Would you like to see it when I have it up?

    Hi Eddie

It's Jesse! Thanks for the animation board tip! I will be looking for an animation disc from cartoon color or ebay. It's amazing how people can make cool old retro looking cartoons by using todays techology. I mean if you look at the back grounds in "Ren Seeks Help" you will notice they look like back grounds from MGM or WB.

    your pal,

    Jesse

P.S. "COOL DRAWINGS" They look like they could make a great series! Good luck on that.
