ONE MORE TWYLA VIDEO
Just so you know: I do NOT have a crush on this girl. I put up another of her philosophy videos just because it's unique and I don't know what to make of it. Here she toasts the audience with a glass of wine studded with giant glass jewels, and stirred with her fingers. I don't know why but that gesture immensely impressed me. The video is 10 minutes long but I can only recommend the first four minutes.
As Chris and Matt observed about the previous post, Twyla is kind of...well, Twyla is Twyla...but you have to give her credit: she's funny and has style, at least in this
video.
I also like the fact that she likes men. I mean men in general, not just Mr. Right. Some girls have base motives for that, some girls are just flirts or love humanity in general, but then some girls do it because they seem to like playing the role of muse for the men in their lives.
When a muse makes an effort to charm a guy I think the guy should accept it as a luxurious gift. He should fall in love with the muse and accept the sting of rejection when he discovers that he took it too seriously. Stendahl said creative people should always be in love.
Like I said, in spite of appearances, I do NOT have a crush on Twyla. She's not my type. I just like the way she provokes discussion, even when she has her fingers in the wine.
Just for fun, here's another philosopher courtesy of Jorge Garrido.

PAGING DOCTOR LOVE! PAGING DOCTOR I.M.N. LOVE!
Eddie, check out this comedy short my best friend's brother made, it's hilarious!

Why are kids naturally funny?
Oh, and for more girl philosophy, check out THIS GIRL.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewImu2iec5c
WARNING: THIS IS THE MOST ANNOYING PERSON IN THE HISTROY OF YOUTUBE.
Eddie, you blew my mind again! You just can't write this stuff.
I found that very touching. (It's worth watching the whole clip because she actually has a theme.)
In a sense, her story is about mourning the passing of her own childhood. The child in the tomb will never grow bored with his favorite toys. His mom has tucked him in for that long good night. Twyla & Holly on the other hand are blooming into young womanhood in spite of themselves with all the excitement & terror of that great adventure.
She drinks a toast to life with a jewelled glass full of her parent's good red wine. She makes a face that suggests she'd really prefer a Shirley Temple & then pronounces it "Delicious!" with breathy sensuality. You gotta like this kid.
She squints too much. She should visit a licensed optometrist.
Re: she "likes men[as a sex, based on your explication]":
"Some girls have base motives for that, some girls are just flirts or love humanity in general, but then some girls do it because they seem to like playing the role of muse for the men in their lives."
Yes, and I'd add that some girls have 500 million other reasons for liking the opposite gender!
These are dangerous waters you're sloshing around in. But then it's your wading pool.
My feeling is we're simply human beings--men and women both. I think at bottom that men "like" women" and women "like" men because we homo sapiens want to enjoy people and like them, damn it!
There's something unsettling about having theories about "motives" for one gender not disliking another-and that the female motives you guess at are such, well, frankly selfish ones. You're presenting women who are muses as liking men because they enjoy "being a muse"?! In other words, they enjoy having an identity set by the man in their life? That's kind of a dead end, not to mention a shame if the man disappears or loses interest, isn't it?
(btw another way to put this muse thing is "being put on a pedestal"; I know that's not what you said, but it's pretty much the same thing-to be "exalted").
This girl? She's intriguing, attractive-what the hey, go ahead-HAVE a crush on her! What in jupiter is wrong with that? If a guy can have an understandable crush on Angelina Jolie, Ellen Page or any actress/model, why not a person on YouTube? Seems perfectly natural to me. She certainly invites the admiration by posting in the first place.
All good stuff Eddie!
Jorge: Wow! Your friend's brother's video is terrific! He's a natural. Some people are just born to work with a camera.
Many thanks also for the annoying girl video. It was so funny that I added it to the post!
I only got through the first two and a half minutes. But!!!
Something just occurred to me. This could be a very elaborate performance piece. We've seen this before on youtube.
Watch closely, the way her eyes dart off to the side (sometimes left, sometimes right) suggest an almost mechanical or rehearsed imitation of thoughtlessness. The consistency of how she stares off into space searching for words. The incredibly tacky wine glass. (The wine glass was a big red flag for me) I feel at times I can almost see her about to break into a laugh but she restrains it somehow. If it's an act the subtlety is amazing.
If she is trying to imitate a lack of depth then she is brilliant. I can't accurately describe it but all the little ticks and quirks seem to have this half second delay from when they would naturally occur. Does anyone else feel that way? People who aren't that clever in real life ussually just spout nonsense without pause. Then again, maybe the camera makes her shy.
This is all a big maybe. But I am hopeful.
Or maybe I'm just some rube looking for high-low art in all the wrong places. Once again, only got through the first two and a half minutes.
Matt: I just assumed it was a performance piece, just like Marylin Monroe was a performance given by Norma Jean. Cary Grant used to say that he had to act the character of Cary Grant, that it didn't come naturally. I don't have a problem with that. That's what performers do.
Erasmussen: No slam against women here. I could easily have done a search for "Philosophy Dudes" and gotten the male equivalent of what's here. I didn't do that because I spend all my time with a guy...me...so I'm already familiar with male weirdness.
Hmmm...I guess to clarify: What I meant was that this was a hilarious send-up or spoof. That in fact she was not taking any of this seriously and considered this a comedic or mocking performance.
Or maybe that's what I was hoping. I don't deserve such an over analytical opinion when I haven't even watched the whole thing.
Whatever ya bring us though Eddie; it's always interesting. Cheers!
Sure, it was a performance. It was the artlessness of it that I found appealing. She's watching herself perform as she tries on the persona of a worldly-wise sophisticate.
Once in a while you see flashes of an hormonally mature woman then it dissolves into subtext. (Mostly) it comes off like a little kid clomping around in her mom's high heels but her feelings are age-appropriate.
Am I the only one who saw the yuck-face every time she took a sip of wine? I wish I could stop-frame it.
That 2nd girl should have a ring in her top lip. I'd buy her a little gold-plated padlock.
No problem. I don't think you were "slamming" women at all, maybe just (mis)judging them. Or making wild blanket statements about an entire sex!
But not a slam. And as I say, it's your pool-that's what we pays our money for!
Eddie, the woman who's videos you need to watch are my friend Lori's.... aka 'The Resident'.
She's beautiful, well-informed, thought provoking, smart, and funny! You'll love her.
- trevor.
That was super awkward...
If it's meant to be serious, it's serious garbage.
If it's meant to be funny, it's too vague and long.
But the girl is hot!
