BASIL WOLVERTON WOMEN

Sorry for the minimal post. Thanksgiving, Christmas shopping, and agonizing over whether to buy a copy of Painter 11 at a "Black Friday" price, took all my time. Boy, I love Christmas but we can all be thankful that it's only once a year.

Making a decision about Painter 11 was hard because the specs support Leopard, but not Snow Leopard, which is my operating system. People on the net were divided about whether Snow Leopard is compatible. Half said it worked just fine for them and half said it didn't. Ordinarily I'd skip something as risky as this but the asking price was ridiculously low....I just couldn't pass it up. Geez, I hope I did the right thing.

Anyway, how do you like these Wolvertons!?  They're made by someone who doesn't identify himself on his site, but whose watermark moniker is Stu Sutcliffe. Nice job, Stu!

Great Wolverton studies, but the artist's name is almost certainly a pseudonym. Stuart Sutcliffe was one of the original members of The Beatles. He died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 22, just before the band hit it big. (BTW, that first scan is none other than Al Capp's "Lena the Hyena" - otherwise known as the ugliest gal in Lower Slobbovia! I never knew she was a natural blonde...)

At first glance, I thought those were toys or "action figures."

Those are some great renderings.

These were were done by the incredible sculptor/artist Colin Batty.

We've worked together in the past and he has done quite a few feature films.

You can find more Wolverton by Batty here: http://www.freakybuttrue.com/wolverton.htm

I've wonder if he did sculpt these as guides for his painting?

Hmmm, now I'm confused because the one is surely a Colin Batty picture but the other isn't. I thing someone used Colin's picture as a reference and did a variation changing the hair and moving some warts around.

Thanks for clueing us in about these! The Wolverton drawings have been burned into my memory ever since I saw the "Miss Potgold" ad parody in MAD #17 a trillion years ago. The top one looks a little too rubbery, but the bottom one is great, especially the way he's managed to capture the personality!

Good Lord, I swear there is a glitch in my PUBLISH YOUR COMMENT button that misspells and scrambles my messages. Computers will only be practical when they fix those operator errors.

HAW. These are even more disgusting in color!

Eddie,

Just wondering if you remember anything about the production of the "Tiny Toons" short you directed, "Scentimental Pig". Apparently the animation was contracted out to a place called Encore Animation and it endured many, many retakes due to their sloppy animation. Do you remember any of this? And was the studio in question run by Bill Hutten and Tony Love?

I am curious to see what you come up with using Painter. It's a program I could never get a grip on.

Are these renderings or images of a 3D object.

If they're digital renderings, I think they're great. Wolverton's style seems perfect for digital rendering

I wonder what Peter Saul thinks of Wolverton.

Joel: Many, many thanks for the info on Colin Blatty!!!!!
Sorry for the delay in responding. I thought I did answer and only now discovered that I didn't.

Brubaker: I'm dying to talk about my experiences with that studio, but for business reasons I can't.

Thomas: Thanks for the Peter Saul. It's not exactly my taste but it's a funny comment on modern art.

Severin: Aaargh! Sorry to hear you had trouble with it. If you had difficulty then I probably will too.

Stu Sutcliffe is indeed a dead Beatle! But I am a real boy!So its not a pseudonym. Colin Batty is a friend of mine, we used to work together at Cosgrove Hall Films many years ago.He is indeed a bona fide genius! Colin also did "Beautiful Girl" at the same time I did it.Im glad my works has escaped to a wider world. Here is some more..http://stusutcliffe.blogspot.co.uk/ I keep trying to get Col to do a blog, because he has so much wonderful stuff to show!
