Shirley's picture is proof positive that the famous Elvgren Smile (above) exists in the real world.
Here's (above) Fernandel, a famous French actor in the 50s, also photographed by Halsman. Thanks to the commenter who linked to this!
Here's (above) sultry Ann Sheridan. I wonder if sultry existed before the era of Hollywood eye make-up?

I don't know who this guy (above) is.
Ditto this girl (above). She has an unusually weak chin. Put your thumb over the chin and try to imagine what her face would be like if she had a chin. You'll see that she's actually very pretty. What a difference a chin makes!
OK, enough about chins! Katie Rice, ace girl artist and proprieter of the world famous "Funny Cute" blog, is auctioning off some of her latest drawings. I saw the originals (which are much more colorful than these photo reproductions) and they are tres formidable! The girl can draw, what can I say?
One of these days we're going to lose her to Paris Vogue and you won't be able to touch one of her originals for less than a thousand dollars. Fortunately for us she doesn't know she's going to be famous yet so we can still buy drawings for what it costs to buy herself hula lessons.
These and other pictures will be on eBay soon, if they're not there now. Check them out on Katie's blog: http://funnycute.blogspot.com/

I believe that lovely gentleman sporting the grimace is Professional Wrestler Gene Snitsky. Wrestlers tend to be fun to draw because alot of them aren't necessarily 'TV' pretty. Well at least their faces aren't anyways.
Speaking of faces to draw from, I think you'll get a kick out of the latest doodle I put up on my blog:

Man, that's one weak chin. Interesting how there's no differentiation between her chin and neck.
Also, Fernandel has an incredibly well-defined philtrum.
And Phil Trum has a very well-defined Fernandel. Strange, isn't it?
Ever notice how weak Wilma Flinstone's chin is? Lots of guys have the hots for her.
that Fernandel guy reminds me of Ron Perlman. Who has a bigger chin than him.
Wherever we lose Katie to when she hits the big time it won't be to Paris Vogue! Or any issue of Vogue. They don't use illustrators, alas. But she'd sure style a hell of a layout.
As for Elvgren smiles? Sure they existed in real life- just look at the Elvgren book(the big one). He painted from photographs he set up & took of real women, and while he did idealize them somewhat, obviously, the photos are startlingly close to the fnished paintings. Gil had great taste in models.
I'm sure these women are still around but for some stupid reason they aren't the ideal so they don't appear in print. Or elsewhere. Probably too "fat".
I've never seen a picture of grown-up Shirley Temple. Odd...she still looks like a kid and a grown-up at once.
I wish I could throw in bags of money- she deserves gold bricks or something!!!! I don't think she's put up her auction yet though.
That weak chin is killing me! When the chin is pushed in, the lips seem really pushed out. Hilarious!
Mr. Fitzgerald, a question:
I am struggling with character faces. When you say these are faces to draw from, can you explain? How should one start off at drawing these faces?
She should put that charicature sketch she did of herself in a hula outfit back on her blog at least. To me it was the most distinct one out of all the frame grabs she put up. To me Katie Rice's sketches have more life in them than the finished one. It shows how she thinks as an artist and that's what I appreciate about rough-sketched pieces the most.
oh god these picture are gold ,the french guy, the brute, and the chinless girl! i have always wanted to see some one who's truly chinless! now i can die happy but not before drawing her.
i wish i could buy one of katie rice's drawings (i'll frame it and hang it in my room) i've never brought anything off the internet ever so i don't know how to go about it.
it'll be funny to see me try :P
Dooley: Phil what?
Emmett: John used to say that you draw a face by first putting into words what the dominant characterstic of the face is.
The philtrum is that little teardrop-shaped vertical groove just below your nose running down to your upper lip.
Man i am fascinated by that weak chin girl.
P.S. katie rules
It was certainly interesting for me to read the post. Thanks for it. I like such topics and everything that is connected to this matter. I definitely want to read a bit more on that blog soon.
