"CANS WITHOUT LABELS"

I thought you guys might like to see how John's film, "Cans Without Labels" is coming along. Weeeeeeelll...It's a John cartoon, need I say more? It is...of course...indubitably (whatever that means)...terrific! John let me take a few frame grabs but I had to do it while he and Jim were patiently waiting to go somewhere, so what you see was taken on the fly, from scenes that are still in the works. I hope you can make sense of it.

In case anyone's forgotten the story, here's a reminder:  George Liquor tries to save a buck at the supermarket by buying cans without labels. He springs this on his nephews Slab and Ernie who have to eat whatever's in the cans.

The kids panic and George tries to put them at ease by telling them he's carefully picked out the cans with the best foods inside. Like this can (above), for example.....

He sloshes it around, weighs it, and counts the rings....(great finger action and expressions in the animation)....

...then it dawns on him what's inside (inbetween pose).

It's gotta be beef stew! Imagine that...a whole can of beef stew for just five cents! Wow! Slab and Ernie can't wait! [BTW, I can't believe how well this is drawn. The cartoon is full of drawings at this level.]

Only.... it's not beef stew. It's....well, you'll just have to see the cartoon.
The kids refuse and George reacts. The whole cheap meal thing doesn't work unless somebody actually eats what's in the can!

He tries persuasion....

....and when that doesn't work......................

Holy crap! I have renewed faith in humanity after seeing these drawings, especially the last one! Very Tex Avery and Clampett like! This also takes my mind off of how I have to move into that questionable, shady apartment with my mother by the end of the week, which is kind of freaking me out because it isn't really a good apartment at all. I feel foolish for not researching the apartments enough for my mother, but she said that the other ones she looked at weren't too good either. She also says she will find the money so that she and I will be able to move back up to Massachusetts sometime during this year, hopefully before the summer or maybe in March or April. If my dad ends up moving to New York, she will let me live with him. I have the bad impression that this was all my fault when it wasn't.

This may be the best inking I've ever seen in an animated cartoon! The lines are all colored and vary in thickness. I guess because John is focusing all his energy into one cartoon, he has time to make it look as god as possible.

It looks much better than the standard thin black line on everything, which is a practical reality forced upon most fully animated cartoons and shorts.

long time blog reader, first time poster (that should be the standard revamp for the blogosphere of the cliched "flong time listener, first time caller" introduction of yore, eh?)...uncle eddie, you are a constant entertainment, i was happy to see these drawings--getting very curious about john k's new project. my favorite still is the george l. "beef stew" smug expression--that's not to say that the "tit eyed" stills aren't great as well.

p.s. roberto, dude, i feel i like i know you from reading this blog! best of luck to you. you sound like a bright guy.
